Meidlinger L - Implementation, demonstration of a systemic overall solution in existing buildings
Against the backdrop of the climate crisis, the pioneering city of Vienna is facing major challenges as a dynamically growing metropolis. The energy transition, renovation wave, climate change adaptation, mobility and transport are of particular importance. The Meidlinger L DEMO implementation project follows on from the Meidlinger L exploratory project and the findings will be implemented in a demonstration in Vienna Meidling.
The situation in Rosaliagasse is a good reflection of the situation in a number of existing buildings and districts: the planned solution makes it possible for the first time to retrofit the MEIDLINGER L modular climbing system quickly and cost-effectively in existing urban buildings in homeowners’ associations (WEGs). The activation of the WEGs already took place in the exploratory phase and brings with it many good synergies, as there is joint approval for the project. The MEIDLINGER L modular trellis system (developed in this project) is intended to enable the broad, comprehensive use of façade greening in existing urban buildings in future.
In combination with the thermal refurbishment of existing buildings and greening, the MEIDLINGER L modular trellis is part of climate change adaptation and enhances public and private spaces alike. The combination of greening and PV, water management, conversion of street space and mobility with the integration of a resilient energy infrastructure as well as the application of a customized financing model becomes a service offer and has a high level of implementation relevance and multiplicability.
The process and technology innovation, which particularly addresses ownership structures and public/private interfaces, can offer benefits for city residents as well as city administrations (climate change adaptation), the economy (opening up new market potential) and science (knowledge gains, new research impulses). The area in question is home to residents in all their cultural/social diversity, newly arrived young people, long-established senior citizens, family households and single-person households, as well as guests of the numerous hotels and guesthouses in the Grätzl. The business community is also diverse and varied. The retrofitting of 4 existing buildings offers lessons for transferability to other locations or (pioneering) cities.
