BIOCHARm - Potential analysis of the use of biochar in the construction sector in Austria
In the BIOCHARm project, the availability of biogenic waste streams in Austria is first analyzed in order to identify suitable raw material sources for the production of biochar. Based on this, various biochars are characterized and their effects on the properties of building materials are examined in detail. Another focus is on life cycle assessment, particularly with regard to the potential impact of biochar as a technology for negative emissions. In addition, practical construction aspects such as workability, installation and durability are systematically examined. The results of these investigations are incorporated into the development of an evaluation matrix that enables a well-founded assessment of the practical use of biochar in the construction industry
The aim is to gain insights into suitable biochar sources and specific areas of application in the construction sector and to develop relevant material properties for biochar building materials. On this basis, concrete recommendations for the future use of biochar in the Austrian construction industry will be developed.
